PIA for youths

Are you between 12 and 16 years old and came to Sweden in 2015 or later?

✔ The program sessions take one hour

✔ Once a week for six weeks

✔ Meet other young people in a similar situation as you

During adolescence, people develop rapidly in different ways. Maybe your interests change, you meet new people and you get new thoughts about life. If you are also new to a country, this can be extra challenging, as you may need to learn a new language, make new friends and understand the new culture. In addition, you need to cope with the school work and think about what you want to do as an adult.

We have developed a program that we hope and believe will help youths who have recently arrived in Sweden to face different types of challenges. As a participant, you get to meet other youths in a similar situation as you. Together, you will discuss and think about things such as how it really feels to come to a new country, what future dreams you have and how you can achieve them.

You meet the group once a week for six weeks. Each meeting takes about an hour. In each group there are 3 – 6 young people and a trained leader who speaks both Swedish and Arabic, Dari, Kurdish (Kurmanji), Somali or Tigrinya. You as a participant can choose which language you want to speak in during the meetings. You will also get to answer surveys about your thoughts on what it is like to be new to Sweden.

Youths who have previously participated in the program have found it enjoyable and would be happy to recommend it to others in a similar situation. Students from selected schools are offered to participate in the program and if you attend one of those schools you will have the opportunity to sign up!

It is a strength to accept help when needed

In order to strengthen confidence in one's own abilities, it is important to see it as something good to receive help when needed (and to know how and where to obtain such support).

Develop your ability to act

Together with other young people, you get the opportunity to discuss and take a position on what is important to you and how you should choose to handle challenges in life.

See your strength and resources

You get help to see your resources and take advantage of them instead of focusing on difficulties. One's own resources can contribute to increasing endurance, flexibility, and the ability to cope with difficulties so that one takes a step forward in development.
